Mary Alice has practiced as a licensed advanced practice nurse (APN) and board Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) for the past 25 years. She has experience providing individual and group health care to women experiencing life challenges as adolescents and young adults, as well as women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. She has also worked with parents of young children and adolescents as well as women experiencing mid-life challenges. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from St. Louis University and received her Master of Science degree in Nurse Midwifery from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently enrolled as a Master’s student in Webster University’s Counseling program with an emphasis on Clinical Mental Health. She works under the supervision of Katie Frauenfelder, MA, LPC, NASM, CPT.
Mary Alice uses a client-centered approach with her clients and believes clients already have the wisdom and inner strength to change and therapy provides an opportunity for client self-discovery. She enjoys listening to client’s stories and helping clients clarify their thoughts, feelings, values, and motivations so they can live a more authentic and meaningful life. Mary Alice uses a holistic approach when working with clients and believes in the mind, body, and spirit connection. She practices Mindfulness and hopes to incorporate Mindfulness-based practices including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in her work with clients. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps clients develop more psychological flexibility by openly accepting current emotional experiences, clarifying what’s most important in their life, and committing to making changes to move their life in a direction towards what is most valued. Mary Alice will also incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) into her counseling practice.
Prior to joining the Center for Mindfulness and CBT, Mary Alice worked as a consultant for Centering Health Care and has facilitated health care groups for adolescents, pregnant women and their families, and parents. She has witnessed the power of group work, seeing clients find their voice and gain the insight and strength needed to move forward in a new direction.
Mary Alice welcomes all adolescent and adult clients with diverse needs and backgrounds to her practice. Some of her areas of interest are women who are dealing with issues related to pregnancy, postpartum, parenting, and midlife/perimenopause. Mary Alice is also interested in working with clients living with a chronic health condition or life-threatening illness.
Because she is a counseling intern Mary Alice does not directly charge for her services, and therefore the center is able to offer these services for a lower fee. To schedule an appointment with Mary Alice, please contact our Client Care Coordinator, Andrea Harpster, at 314-561-9757 option 1, or Andrea@mindfulstl.com.
