Andy earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Westminster College and is now working towards his master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Webster University, under the clinical supervision of Dr. Laura Chackes. He has been a professional writer, musician, and artist and hopes to always incorporate these creative forces in helping children, adolescents, and adults to live more fulfilling lives. Andy believes in an integrative approach to counseling, where processing your values, belief systems, and life’s events is just as important as developing skills and strengths for you to practice independently throughout your life.
Along with the skills associated with cognitive-behavioral therapy (changing thinking, mood, and behavior) and mindfulness (focusing on the here and now), Andy incorporates the principles of narrative therapy, which is a collaborative, creative process. The goal of narrative therapy is to create healthier personal stories that break through the one-sided, destructive language and thought patterns that can result in self-imposed, harmful labels. Every person is subjected to the infinite power of external forces, and many times a person’s internal creation of the world results in a repeating story that shapes one’s life in a negative way.
Narrative therapy questions your current perceptions and provides space, hope, and opportunity for growth. Additionally, Andy uses logotherapy to help you uncover your passions and purpose in life to help set goals and a healthy direction. Ultimately, Andy takes a client-centered approach (where you are the expert in your life) and hopes to incorporate humor, irony, and metaphors to help break down barriers, broaden the language being used, and unlock the often-hidden, productive side to one’s story.
Andy welcomes people of all ages from diverse backgrounds with diverse needs in life. Because he is currently in graduate school, Andy does not directly charge clients for his services, and therefore the center is able to offer his services for a low fee. Andy is thrilled to accommodate so many people who seek counseling.
