B.S., M.A. (in progress)
William Proffer is currently pursuing his master’s degree in clinical psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he is training as a clinician. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as well. William is completing his clinical internship at the Center for Mindfulness & CBT, where he works with children, teens, and adults experiencing a range of mental health concerns. His clinical interests include sleep disorders, depression, and anxiety-related disorders.
William specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the leading treatment for insomnia recommended over medication by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He uses evidence-based strategies such as sleep restriction therapy, stimulus control, and cognitive therapy for insomnia to help clients restore healthy sleep patterns and improve daytime functioning. In addition to individual work, William also leads CBT-I group therapy, helping clients apply these skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.
William believes that hope and practical skills are essential building blocks for lasting change. His goal is to help clients strengthen their ability to navigate challenges, grow in self-understanding, and move toward a healthier and more fulfilling life. He tailors his approach to each person’s needs, drawing primarily from CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Outside of his clinical work, William enjoys playing music, lifting weights, watching sports, reading about philosophy and psychology, and spending time with his friends, family, and his dog, Ody.
As an intern, William is able to offer services at a discounted rate of $55/session. William is supervised by Sarah Saffold, LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker MO #2022035657 who can be reached at sarahs@mindfulstl.com and will be overseeing care for all of William’s clients.
